Museums in Baku

Museums in Baku will amaze you with their low ticket prices and the richness of their collections compared to European museums. Arriving in Baku, you can see more than 30 museums covering everything from history and ethnography to a collection of tiny books. But some of them must be visited. It is especially recommended to visit the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, Heydar Aliyev Center, Azerbaijan National Art Museum, Museum of Miniature Books, Maiden Tower, Museum of Contemporary Art, Shirvanshahs Museum, National History Museum of Azerbaijan.

Museums in Baku have their own schedules. The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum is located at the seaside boulevard, on 28 Mikail Huseynov Avenue, (opposite the funicular). Working hours: Tuesday to Sunday From 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, closed on Monday, admission is 7 AZN ($4.11). The most unique types of carpets from all regions of Azerbaijan are exhibited in carpet museums.

Azerbaijan National Art Museum is located on 9/11 Niyazi Street, working hours:  Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed on Monday, admission is 10 AZN ($6). The museum complex is located in two mansions – in the house of De Bour, and the second house is the women’s gymnasium of St Nina. This museum exhibits unique works of artists and sculptors of Azerbaijan and world culture.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located on Yusif Safarov Street 5, working hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00, am to 7:00 pm, closed on Monday. Admission is 5 AZN($3). This museum exhibits the work of contemporary artists and sculptors.

The Maiden Tower Museum is located in the old town, working hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed on Monday, the ticket fee is 15 AZN ($9).

The Shirvanshahs Museum is located in the old city. Working hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed on Monday. Admission is 15 AZN ($9). This museum shows exhibits from the period of the Shirvanshahs’ reign. Built from the 8th to the 16th century, the palace itself was built in the 15th century.

The Museum of Miniature Books is located in the old city, near the palace of the Shirvanshahs. Working days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday and Thursday aren’t working days, admission is free.

The Heydar Aliyev Center is one of the most expensive museums in Baku, located on Aliyev Avenue 1, working: Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00, am to 6:00 pm. The ticket fee is 15 AZN ($9), closed on Monday. The architect of the building is Zaha Hadid.

The National History Museum of Azerbaijan is located on Tagiyev Street 4. Working days: Tuesday to Sunday, admission is 10 AZN ($6), closed on Monday. This museum is located in the house of the famous Azerbaijani oil magnate Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. This museum exhibits a large collection of historical monuments of Azerbaijani culture, which can be used to form an idea of the history of the country since ancient times.
